3D Frontlit Signboard Malaysia — Custom LED Front Lit Signs for Every Business

Your shop is open and customers are passing by. But if your signboard does not catch their eye during the day or at night they just keep walking. A 3D frontlit signboard fixes that. It puts your business name out in bold illuminated 3D lettering that people can read clearly from across the road. At HC Creative Hub we have been making and installing these signs across KL, Selangor and Putrajaya since 2013. Over 1,000 projects completed. We know what works.

What Is a 3D Frontlit Signboard

A 3D frontlit signboard also called papan tanda frontlit or signbod 3D depan in Malay is made from dimensional box up lettering. Each letter or logo shape is built as a hollow 3D form. The front of each letter is a light transmitting acrylic sheet and LED lights sit inside shining forward through the acrylic face.

What you see is your brand name in solid glowing 3D letters. Bold in daylight, Bright at night. Clean from any angle.

This type of sign is also known as a 3D box up signboard, front lit signage or face lit sign. Different names but same product. It is the most widely used main signboard for Malaysian businesses.

Frontlit vs Backlit — Which One Do You Actually Need

This is the most common question we get before someone places an order.

A frontlit signboard has LEDs inside each letter box shining forward through the acrylic face. The face itself glows. It is bright, direct and readable from a long distance. This is the right choice for shopfronts on busy roads, food courts, commercial buildings and any location where you need people to spot your business quickly.

A backlit signboard has LEDs placed behind the letters. The light creates a soft halo glow around the outside of each letter against the wall. The letter itself does not glow. It looks more elegant and subtle. This works well for beauty brands, hotels, high end retail and spaces where atmosphere matters more than raw visibility.

If you are unsure which suits your business our team will tell you honestly during the first conversation. Most shops and food businesses go with frontlit. If you want both effects together we also make a frontlit mix backlit version that combines front glow with halo light in one sign.

How Far Can a Frontlit Signboard Be Seen

This is a practical question that matters a lot when planning your sign.

Letter height determines how far your sign can be read. As a general guide, letters that are 6 inches tall are clearly readable from around 15 to 20 feet away. Letters at 12 inches are readable from 30 to 40 feet. Larger letters on a wider fascia sign can be seen from further down the road.

The LED brightness, the colour contrast between your letters and the background, and whether your sign faces the main road directly all affect real-world visibility. When we assess your site we check the actual viewing angle and road distance so the sign dimensions we recommend are based on your real location not a standard template.

What the Sign Is Made From

Every part of a frontlit signboard has a job to do. Here is what goes into each one we make.

The letter frame is built from aluminium or stainless steel box up construction. Aluminium is used for most shopfront projects. It is rust resistant, light enough to mount cleanly on most wall surfaces and holds up well in Malaysia's outdoor conditions. Stainless steel is used when the installation is larger or where extra structural strength is needed.

The front face of each letter is cut from a 3mm acrylic sheet or other size that allows light to pass through evenly. This is cut using CNC routing, so the edges of your letters and logo shapes are clean and precise. The acrylic grade used is light transmitting which means the glow is smooth across the whole face without bright spots or dark patches.

The lighting inside each letter uses LED modules or LED strips depending on the letter size and design. Both give consistent front illumination. A transformer also called an LED driver converts mains power to the correct voltage for the LEDs. All electrical connections are properly sealed.

The sides of each letter are made from non light transmitting material, which is usually aluminium, stainless steel or EG sheet. These sides keep the light contained so the glow only comes through the front acrylic face and not the edges.

The full assembly is waterproof and built for permanent outdoor installation. Malaysia's climate means any outdoor sign faces heavy rain, high humidity and strong UV exposure year round. Everything we install is sealed and built for those conditions.

Real Projects — What We Have Built

For Szindore Perfume, we made two outdoor frontlit signs for their shopfront. The main fascia sign was 2 feet by 10 feet and the secondary sign was 2 feet by 6 feet. Both used aluminium box up construction with a custom layout built around their brand identity. Both signs are still up and performing well outdoors.

For The Majestic Pizza and My Laundry House we have done frontlit signboards for their retail outlets across the Klang Valley. FS Bikes and Sportizza are among the commercial clients where we handled full signboard sets that included frontlit lettering for their main fascia displays.

Beyond retail we have also completed 3D signage work for University of Malaya, CelcomDigi and Le Meridien Putrajaya across academic, corporate and hospitality settings.

What Does a Frontlit Signboard Cost

Every sign is custom made so there is no standard price list. Three things determine the final cost.

Size is the biggest factor. A 2 foot by 6 foot sign costs significantly less than a 10 foot wide fascia sign. The more letters and the larger the overall dimensions the higher the fabrication cost.

Material choice also affects the price. Aluminium box up is the standard option for most projects. Stainless steel costs more and is used when the design calls for a heavier or more premium construction.

Design complexity is the third factor. A simple business name in a clean font takes less time to fabricate than a detailed logo with multiple shapes, separate colour sections or custom finishes.

The fastest way to get a real number is to send us your logo, tell us your rough sign size and location and we will quote you directly. Most quotes come back the same day via WhatsApp.

Do You Need a Signboard License Before Installing

Yes. Most outdoor signboards in Malaysia require approval from your local council before they go up. In Kuala Lumpur, this falls under DBKL. In Selangor the relevant authority depends on your area and could be MBPJ, MBSA or MPSJ.

The license covers the approved size, placement and content of your sign. Installing without one can result in fines or a notice to take the sign down.

We advise all our clients on this during the planning stage. We build signs to the approved dimensions for your area from the start so there are no compliance issues after installation. Is a Frontlit Signboard the Right Choice for Your Business

Here is a straightforward way to decide.

A frontlit signboard is the right choice if your business is on a main road or in a busy commercial area and you need passing traffic to notice you clearly. It works well for a new outlet opening for the first time and for an existing business replacing an old sign that has faded or stopped working.

It is a strong choice for restaurants, cafes, retail shops, pharmacies, clinics, education centres, salons, gyms, corporate offices and commercial buildings. It also works indoors for reception walls, lobby branding and mall tenant fascias.

It is probably not the right choice if atmosphere and subtlety matter more than brightness. A high end beauty salon or boutique hotel might get more value from a backlit or combination sign. If that sounds like your situation our team will tell you that honestly before you commit to anything.

If you are still deciding the simplest thing to do is send us your logo, share your location and let us give you a recommendation based on your actual shopfront.

Our Process From Brief to Installed Sign

The first step is a quick brief where you share your logo, brand colours, sign location and rough size requirements. If you are not sure about size rules in your area we advise on DBKL or MBPJ guidelines at this stage.

The second step is the design mockup. We build a digital visualisation of your sign on your actual shopfront so you can see exactly how it will look before we start fabricating. You review it and approve before we touch any material.

The third step is fabrication. We cut the aluminium box up letters, fit the acrylic faces, wire the LED components and assemble the complete sign in our workshop.

The fourth step is installation. Our team handles all wall mounting, structural fixing and electrical connection at your location. Most shopfront installations are completed within one day.

The fifth step is testing and handover. We check even illumination across all letters, no dark spots and clean wiring before we leave. Your sign is ready to go.

Total time from design confirmation to installed sign is 5 to 7 working days for most standard projects.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a 3D front lit signboard and how does it work?

It is a sign made from hollow 3D letters built from aluminium or stainless steel. The front of each letter is a light transmitting acrylic sheet. LED lights inside each letter shine forward through the acrylic making the face glow evenly. The sign is visible in daylight because of the physical depth of the letters and brightly lit at night from the LEDs inside.

How far away can a frontlit signboard be read?

This depends on letter height. Roughly speaking 6 inch letters are clearly readable from around 15 to 20 feet and 12 inch letters from 30 to 40 feet. Larger letters on a wide fascia can be seen from further down the road. We advise on the right letter size based on your specific location and the viewing distance in front of your shop.

How long does a frontlit signboard last outdoors in Malaysia?

A properly built sign with sealed LED components and quality aluminium framing lasts 5 to 8 years outdoors without major issues. The main factors are the quality of the LED driver, how well the electrical parts are sealed against humidity and whether UV-resistant acrylic was used. All our outdoor signs are built for Malaysia's climate.

Can a frontlit signboard be used indoors?

Yes. The build is exactly the same. For office lobbies, reception walls and mall fascias the sign performs the same way. Waterproofing is less of a concern indoors but the construction quality stays the same.

What decides the size of my sign?

Your shopfront width, the signboard size rules from your local council and your brand layout are the three main factors. We advise on approved dimensions during consultation so your sign is compliant from day one.
